Petroglyphs are ancient carvings or drawings made
on rock surfaces. The two-petroglyph symbols represent a canoe
paddler and a Hawaiian voyaging canoe. Canoe paddling in modern
day Hawaii has become a very popular and competitive sport. Recent
interest in the voyaging methods of the ancient hawaiians led to
the construction and sailing voyages of The Hokulea, a double-hulled
voyaging canoe built using ancient methods, as a reenactment of
the voyages of native Hawaiian people who navigated the Polynesian
triangle using astronomy. Like their ancestors, the crew of the
Hokulea sailed by the stars on their many trips to Alaska, Tahiti,
Rapa Nui, and the South Pacific.
