Tropical
Heliconia
Watercolor |

Heliconia (Heliconaceae) is native to Central America,
South America, and South Pacific islands. This decorative plant
is found to grow in moist regions at elevations less than 1,500
feet. Plant size varies between 2 feet to 20 feet. The uniquely
shaped and colorfully vibrant parts which make the heliconia
so recognizable are not flowers, but highly modified leaves called
bracts. The plant's flowers are actually hidden within these
bracts. Heliconia blooms during the months of May through August.
Among the popular varieties of this plant are the "Parrot's Beak" and "Sexy
Pink."
